Vieques (Isla de Vieques)

Vieques (Isla de Vieques)

Vieques (Isla de Vieques) is part of an island grouping known as the Spanish Virgin Islands which lies about 8 miles off the southeastern coast of Puerto Rico.  It is known for its gorgeous and secluded beaches, semi-wild horses, snorkeling and boat tours of Bioluminescent Bay – or Mosquito Bay.

Since the departure of the U.S. Navy in 2003, the environmental authorities declared 70% of the island a U.S. Fish & Wildlife Refuge.

In addition to the pristine beaches, there are plenty of activities and places to explore while on the island.  From various art galleries to the small fort on the island called Fortin Conde de Marisol, along with water activities, visitors have much to explore whether for a quick weekend or a longer stay. Depending on your budget you can either grab a 30-minute flight from San Juan or as a walk-on passenger on the Ferry from Fajardo,

Fiestas Patronales de Vieques
During the third week in July, islanders celebrate the Vírgen del Carmen, patron saint of the sea and fisherman.  There are food stands, live music, dancers and parades.  The local beverage is a white rum, cinnamon and fruit concoction (bili) carried around by the locals in jugs.
